For the third year running, erJ is closed for 24 hours this Black Friday.

It’s a big decision for a small business, but one I believe in deeply. This day has become a symbol of overconsumption, pressure, and profit for the few. It doesn’t align with the values I built erJ on: thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and a slower, more intentional way of creating and buying.

That’s not to say I’m against discounts, times are tough, and there’s nothing wrong with getting something you’ve wanted for less. But that’s not really what Black Friday is about anymore. It’s about big corporations pushing mass volume through the system at an unsustainable rate, often at the expense of people and the planet.

Last year, shoppers in the UK spent over £9 billion across the Black Friday weekend, most of it going straight to mega-corporations. Imagine the difference we could make if even a fraction of that were redirected towards small businesses, independent makers, or simply spent with more thought.

By closing erJ today, I’m taking a quiet stand for mindful consumption and for the belief that jewellery should be made and bought with intention, not impulse.

Thank you for being here, for choosing slower ways of shopping, and for supporting independent craftsmanship.

erJ will reopen tomorrow. 🤍
